For the first time in a decade, the direction of future research into combining radio- and chemotherapy is clear. For cancers with both local control problems and metastatic potential, it is generally agreed that a combined therapeutic approach provides greater benefits than either modality alone. Now, a study involving patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) has provided further clarification on the best strategies for treatment. As reported at the European Cancer Conference [ECCO; Paris, France; October/November 1995 ], sequential therapy appears to be a better option than concomitant treatment. Researchers are now faced with the task of improving each of the components in this combination.
