Metal-Coated Carbon Fibres for Multifunctional CFRPs

A research project has been set up to coat carbon fibres with metal using vapour deposition and electroplating processes. These methods provide the opportunity of applying evenly distributed metal coatings of different thicknesses to the carbon fibres. This new approach has the potential to provide solutions to challenging problems, such as the development of wear-resistant lightweight structures.

The aim of the TranS-Ver (Transfer of Innovative Smart Fibre Composites to Saxon SMEs) junior research group based at Chemnitz University of Technology is to investigate smart materials. By coating carbon fibres and processing them to produce carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs), it is possible to create composites for use in multi-functional lightweight components.

During the first phase of grant-funding, coating processes for individual carbon fibres using DC magnetron sputtering were developed, together with coating processes for carbon fibre rovings using electrochemical deposition....
