Possible pathophysiological mechanisms of changes in several cytokines and in the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system in first-episode schizophrenia patients

Abstract

Cytokines and indices of the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system were investigated in the blood. Sixty-six patients with first-episode paranoid schizophrenia were included in this research. An increase in proinflammatory cytokines (IL1β, IL8, TNFα, and IFNα), immune interleukin 2, and a decrease in the anti-inflammatory interleukin 4 were observed in schizophrenic patients. An increase in lipoperoxidation and a decrease in glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activity were found as well. We discuss some pathophysiological mechanisms of changes in cytokines, lipid peroxidation, and the antioxidant defense system.
