Ovnatanova (1976, p. 113) published a new subspecies name Palmatolepis subperlobata helmsi Ovnatanova, 1976 in honor of I. Helms, a famous German researcher of Devonian conodonts. The subspecies was found in borehole 116 in the 1630.1–1633.6 m interval of the Prikazanskaya Formation of Tatarstan, along with an Early Famennian conodont assemblage. It was subsequently shown (Klapper et al., 2004, p. 379) that the name was preoccupied and was a junior homonym of Palmatolepis helmsi Ziegler, 1962. Palmatolepis subperlobata helmsi was also indicated as a junior homonym in a later study (Becker and Hartenfels, 2016, p. 37). The species P. helmsi was described by W. Ziegler from the Famennian deposits of the Rhenish Slate mountains (Ziegler, 1962).
A new replacement name Palmatolepis subperlobata tatarica Ovnatanova et Gatovsky, nom. nov. is proposed for P. subperlobata helmsi Ovnatanova, 1976 because of the homonymy, in accordance with Article 52.1 of the ICZN (International Code …, 1999); the name refers to the Republic of Tatarstan, from where the subspecies was first described. The new name retains the same holotype (Ovnatanova, 1976, pl. 9, fig. 7) and still refers to a subspecies of P. subperlobata Branson et Mehl, 1934. The holotype no. 40/68 is housed at the All-Russia Research Geological Oil Institute (VNIGNI, Moscow, Russia).
