Clinging to Hope: An Urgent Call to Rejuvenate and Revitalize Institutions of Liberal Democracy: An Interview with Jennifer Welsh

Introducing Prof. J. Welsh

One of the more interesting voices to recently emerge in contemporary scholarship on international relations has been that of Prof. Jennifer Welsh. Since 2014, she has been Professor and Chair in International Relations at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, where she has been leading the European Research Council project on the ‘The Individualisation of War: Reconfiguring the Ethics, Law and Politics of Armed Conflict’.

In her interview, Prof. Welsh shared with the Development Journal her views and insights on the challenges that liberal democracy is currently facing, as well as her hopes and fears for the future. The backdrop to the interview was the recent book that Prof. Welsh authored The Return of History—Conflict, Migration and Geopolitics in the 21st Century, which was based on the 2016 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s (CBC) Massey Lectures.
