Incidence of Chilo zacconius Bleszynski on Some Rice Varieties in Relation to Plant Characters

Abstract

Some morphological characters of the rice plant were found to be associated with resistance to the African striped borer, Chilo zacconius Bleszynski. A very low, but negative correlation was recorded between percentages of bored stems and plant height. Positive correlations were recorded between percentages of bored stems and stem diameters, stem thickness, length and width of flag leaves and number of tillers per plant. High silica content in rice plants appeared to be a strong factor in resistance to the striped borer. Negative correlations were recorded between percentages of crude silica content of the plants and percentages of bored stems and number of living larvae per plant. Although each of these factors appeared to contribute to borer resistance, none by itself could be said to be the main cause of such resistance, as some varieties did not conform to some of the characters.

Résumé

Une association entre certains caractères morphologiques chez le riz et la resistance des plants au perceur rayé africain, Chilo zacconius Bleszynski a été trouvé. Une correlation negative et moins élevée a été obtenue entre le pourcentage des tiges percées et la taille de plantes. Les pourcentages de tiges percées et la diamètre des tiges, l’épaisseur des tiges, la longueur, et la largeur des feuilles attachées aux panicules ainsi quelle nombre de talle par plante art révélé de correlations positives. La haute teneur en silice des plants apparaît comme un facteur déterminant pour la resistance du riz au boreur africain à raies. La teneur en silica brute, les pourcentages de tiges percées et la nombre de larves rivantes par plant se sont négativement correlés. Aucum des facteurs morphologiques étudiés n’a joué un rôle primordial dans la résistance des varieties du riz.
