Ovipositional Orientation of an Aphidophagous Ladybird Beetle, Propylea dissecta (Mulsant)

Abstract

The ovipositional orientation of an aphidophagous ladybird beetle, Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in terms of geo- and photo-taxis, colour and texture of substrates was studied. The beetle exhibited a high preference for negatively geotactic substrates for oviposition. There was no clear preference for positively or negatively phototactic substrates. When studied in combination, it was observed that substrates that were negatively geotactic were preferred over other substrates regardless of the phototaxis. Red was highly preferred over the other 5 colours tested, and plastic was the substrate of choice for P. dissecta oviposition.

Résumé

Le comportement d’oviposition d’une coccinelle aphidiphage, Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) a été étudié en relation avec la géo- et la phototaxie et, la couleur et la texture des substrats. La coccinelle montre une forte préférence ovipositionnelle pour les substrats ayant une géotaxie négative. Aucune préférence pour les substrats à phototaxie négative ou positive n’a pu être mise en évidence. Lorsque l’on a combiné les facteurs, on a constaté que la coccinelle préfère les substrats présentant une géotaxie négative aux autres substrats quelque soit leur phototaxie. La coccinelle montre une forte préférence pour le rouge par rapport aux 5 autres couleurs testées, et le plastique est le substrat de choix pour l’oviposition de P. dissecta.
