Ectoparasites of Horses in South-Western Nigeria

Arthropods feeding on horses in the stables situated in three towns in south-western Nigeria were investigated. Flies were caught on horses with trap-net while ticks and lice were picked from them with forceps. Stomoxys, Tabanus, Glossina and Hippobosca species were the main blood-sucking flies caught, while myiasis flies and Musca species were also found. Furthermore, three genera of ticks, Boophilus, Hyalomma and Rhipicephalus and two species of lice, Haematopinus equi and Damalina equi, were recorded. The veterinary importance of the association of these arthropods with horses is discussed.

Les arthropodes s’alimentant sur les chevaux au sud-ouest du Nigéria ont été étudiés. Les mouches ont été attrapées par moyen d’un piège à mouches, tandis que les tiques et les poux ont été enlevés utilisant des pinces. Parmi les mouches suceuses, les espèces principales identifiées étaient celles de Stomoxys, Tabanus, Glossina et Hippobosca. On a également retrouvé les mouches des espèces Myiasis et Musca. La présence des trois genres de tiques, le Boophilus le Hyalomma et le Rhipicephalus, et de deux espèces de poux, le Haematopinus equi et le Damalina equi a été enregistrée. L’article comprend une discussion de l’importance vétérinaire de l’association de ces arthropodes avec le cheval.
