Field Infestation and Damage to Soybean and Cowpea by Pod-Sucking Bugs in Benue State, Nigeria

Abstract

Soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merril, andcowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., were grown in field plots in 1988 and 1989 to compare infestation and damage by pod-sucking bugs (PSBs). Population of PSB was monitored by counting adults and nymphs on rows two and six of each plot from 5 to 14 weeks after planting. Cowpea was infested mainly by Clavigralla tomentosicollis (Stai.), C. shadabi (Germ.), Mirperusjaculus (Thnb.) mdAspavia armigera F., while soybean was infested by M.jaculus, Anoplocnemis curvipes (F.) and Riptortus dentipes F. Soybean had exceedingly low PSB density, < 1 bug/2 m-row, in 1988 and 1989. Four sprays of 400 g a.i./ha. dimethoate had no significant effect on pod and seed damage, yield and germination, compared to the unsprayed control. In contrast, cowpea attracted high populations of PSBs, 30 and 1 bug/2 m-row, in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Dimethoate sprayed against PSBs on cowpea resulted in two- to four-fold reductions (P < 0.05) in pod and seed damage and yield increases of 1500 kg/ha. (P < 0.05) in 1988 and 300 kg/ha. (P < 0.05) in 1989.

Résumé

La graine de soja, Glycine max (L.) Merril, et le niébé, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, sont été culti vésdans le terrain de champ en 1988 et en 1989 à fin de comparer le dégât crie par les insectes (punaises) surtout le Clavigralla tomentosicollis (Stai.), C. shadabi (Germ.), Mirperus jaculus (Thnb.) et Aspavia armigera F.

La graine de soja avait la densité PSB excessivement base, 2 punaises/10 m d’une rangée en 1988 et 1 punaise/10 m d’une rangée en 1988 et 1 punaise/10 m d’une rangée en 1989, contre lequel 400 g a.l/ha. dimethoate pulvérisateur avait aucun choc importante, en ce qui concerne la prevention de dégât de la cosse et la graine, et aussi de plus la production et la germination pourcentage de la graine.

Le cowpea au contraire avait attiré la population de PSB très haute; 152 punaises et 4 punaises/ 10 m d’une rangée en 1988 et 1989 respectivement. Le pulvérisateur de dimethoate contre PSB sur le niébé a resuite en 2–4 plié reduction (P < 0.05) dans le dégât de la cosse et la graine et aussi dans la production de 1.5 t/ha (P < 0.05) en 1988 et 0.3 t/ha (P > 0.05) en 1989.
