Gibt es tatsächlich einen „spiritual turn“ in der Psychotherapie?

Zusammenfassung

Zunehmend ist von einem spiritual turn in der Psychotherapie im deutschsprachigen Raum die Rede. Der Begriff meint sowohl ein allgemeines religionssoziologisches Phänomen als auch eine Binnenveränderung der psychotherapeutischen Versorgungslandschaft. Es wird untersucht, ob es Indikatoren für einen Bedeutungszuwachs des Spirituellen bei den psychotherapeutischen Akteurinnen und Akteuren in Deutschland gibt. Die wenigen empirischen Studien an Psychotherapeut(inn)en und Patient(inn)en lassen keine eindeutigen Schlüsse zu. Allerdings zeigt sich ein Zuwachs an wissenschaftlichen Publikationen und berufspolitischen Stellungnahmen, die eine stärkere Berücksichtigung von Spiritualität in Aus- und Weiterbildung fordern. In der Psychoanalyse hat vor allem eine Entpathologisierung persönlichen Glaubens und eine Entschärfung religionskritischer Haltungen stattgefunden. In der Verhaltenstherapie haben Konzepte wie Achtsamkeit oder Vergebung, die ursprünglich in spirituellen Traditionen beheimatet waren, eine säkulare Integration gefunden. Es wird diskutiert, ob es sich bei dem propagierten spirituellen turn eher um eine Akzentverschiebung und nicht um einen Paradigmenwechsel in der psychotherapeutischen Versorgung in Deutschland handelt.

Abstract

In the last twenty years the term spiritual turn in psychotherapy has been frequently used in the German-speaking countries. The history of the concept shows that both a general sociological phenomenon and a change in the psychotherapeutic care is addressed by this term. It is examined whether there are indicators for an increase in the importance of spirituality in psychotherapeutic care in Germany. The few empirical studies on psychotherapists and patients do not allow any clear conclusions. However, there is an increase in scientific publications and professional statements that call for a stronger consideration of spirituality in education and training. In psychoanalysis a depathologization of personal faith and a decline of critical attitudes concerning religion can be observed. In behavioral therapy, concepts such as mindfulness or forgiveness, which were originally rooted in spiritual traditions, have found a secular integration. It is discussed whether the spiritual turn is more a slight shift in emphasis and not a fundamental shift in psychotherapeutic care in Germany.
