Vaginal involvement of transitional cell carcinoma—metastasis or primary tumor?

Zusammenfassung

Das Urothelkarzinom der Harnblase (auch Transitionalzellkarzinom [TCC]) zählt weltweit zu den häufigsten Malignomen der Frau. Es metastasiert bevorzugt in Knochen, Leber, Gehirn und Peritoneum. Vaginale Manifestationen dieser Tumorentität gelten jedoch als untypisch und sind extrem selten. Die Entstehung solcher vaginalen Manifestationen ist noch ungeklärt und derzeit Gegenstand intensiver Forschungen. Wir berichten den seltenen Fall einer 72-jährigen Patientin mit einem vaginalen Rezidiv eines Urothelkarzinoms bei primär nicht muskelinvasivem niedriggradigem Karzinom der Harnblase. Hierbei sollen wichtige klinische und therapeutische Aspekte hervorgehoben werden.

Abstract

Urinary bladder cancer (also called transitional cell carcinoma, TCC) is one of the most common cancers in women in the world. Typically, metastases occur in the bones, liver, brain and peritoneum. However, involvement of the female genital tract by TCC is considered atypical and extremely rare. The pathogenesis of vaginal TCC is not yet understood and is currently the subject of intensive research. We report the rare case of a 72-year-old woman with vaginal recurrence of TCC in primary nonmuscle-invasive low-grade bladder cancer. Important clinical and therapeutic aspects are highlighted.
