This journal is 104 years old. Not surprisingly, it has had its ups and downs during this long journey. Its most recent transformation came about in 2007 when it became a multidisciplinary review journal to keep pace with the changing times. In recent years, Prof. T. N. Guru Row and his editorial board members have nurtured it and made it into a journal that IISc can be proud of. And with this issue, they pass on the mantle to a new editorial board.

As the new team takes charge, we see a responsibility to maintain the current standards and possibly surpass them. We also see opportunities for growth in the international academic community because the journal is being marketed and distributed by Springer Nature (the partnership began in 2017). We have 11 distinguished academics taking charge as members of the new editorial board of the journal. They represent several disciplines of science and engineering. You can learn about them in the brief biographies included in this issue. It is my pleasure to welcome them and thank the past members, especially the previous Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Guru Row. I count on his guidance in the years to come. Prof. Anurag Kumar, Director of IISc, continues to support the journal in more ways than one. I thank him for his support. Prof. Kaushal Verma, Chair of the Archives and Publications Cell in IISc, will continue to help in his official capacity as the Executive Editor and academic capacity as professor of mathematics. Ms. Kavitha Harish is the lynchpin of the journal, deftly handling all communications and administrative matters of the journal. The Springer Nature team gives the professional edge that we value. It is my privilege to serve this journal with all these people behind it.

In this issue, Prof. M. Santosh and Prof. Sajeev Krishnan introduce us to the complexities of Earth and what lies beneath. By focusing on the Indian peninsula, the authors of the review papers assemble the pieces of the puzzle to provide a comprehensive view of the geological and tectonic processes in this region. The journal is grateful to all of them for their wonderful work.
