Seabuckthorn: Opportunities and Challenges in Ladakh

Ladakh covers around 70% area of Jammu and Kashmir and houses diverse groups of medicinally important plants. One of these plants is Seabuckthorn. A storehouse of innumerable health promoting substances, this plant has assumed immense significance for the past decade or so. Despite being a dominant inhabitant of Ladakh and covering around 11,500 ha of land, it is used to a limited extent by the local populace. These uses are deep rooted traditionally and are not known to all. Surveys were carried out in different villages of Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh region to record data and collect information on the ethno botanical usage of Seabuckthorn. The paper discusses the indigenous uses of this medicinal plant vis-a-vis its potential for sustainable utilization, which is not realized to the fullest.
