Potentials of Engines with Variable Compression Ratio

Especially in combination with high-pressure boosting, variable compression ratio and gasoline direct injection are intended for reducing fuel consumption. The two strategies both aim at significantly increased SI engines’ torque and power density enabling optimum downsizing and downspeeding. Additionally cooled EGR can provide synergies to VCR in the more and more important unthrottled operating area used by downsizing/downspeeding engines. AVL has analysed the potentials.

MARKET SITUATION

Future CO2 legislation is one of the key challenges for future passenger car powertrains [1]. Europe and Japan lead the reduction of CO2 emissions; China has announced further stringent CO2 reductions, US follows with a five to ten year offset. Many OEM’s meet this challenge with downsizing/downspeeding their engines [2]. Audi, BMW, VW and Daimler already have a considerable amount of charged engines in their portfolios.
