Reduced Steering Wheels for Automation

The level of automated driving also influences the functions and the shape of the future steering wheel. From level 4 onwards, a part of the steering wheel rim could be omitted in order to create more leg room for the driver. In a subject study, Takata found out that these reduced steering wheels could disturb traffic safety. It is advisable to flatten the 6 o’clock area, but to use a closed and not an interrupted steering wheel rim to ensure vehicle controllability.

Steering Wheels for Vehicles with Autonomous Driving Functions

The demands on and requirements for the steering wheel as a control element in the vehicle will change according to the different automation levels [ 1]. With the introduction of levels 2 and 3 (the driver continually monitors the automation or intervenes after a system prompt) the steering wheel, Figure 1, becomes the central hand-over device between vehicle and driver [ 2].
