Aerodynamic Performance of New Supercar Concepts

To investigate the performance of this new aerodynamic approach, KLK Motorsport conducted a comparative study on a representative vehicle following this new design philosophy. A generic supercar CAD-model incorporating the novel undercarriage was used to simulate and analyze the aerodynamics in the CFD program Star-CCM+ from Siemens PLM Software.

Aerodynamics of Supercars

The aerodynamics of most supercars are based on a flat undercarriage with minimal ground clearance, combined with a rear diffuser, rear wing and a front diffuser, Figure 1. Strong interactions between these elements define their overall performance. The rear diffuser is located in the rear section of the undercarriage. Its function is to generate a suction effect below the vehicle. To do this, it accelerates the airflow over the entire undercarriage, generating a low pressure which sucks the vehicle to the ground.
