Inzwischen sind viele sehr kleine Frühgeborene („very low birth weight“, VLBW) bis ins junge Erwachsenenalter nachuntersucht. Es zeigt sich, dass sowohl zahlreiche Organfunktionen als auch die psychische Gesundheit später im Leben beeinträchtigt sein können.
