Weltweit sind Pneumokokken eine der häufigsten bakteriellen Ursachen von Pneumonie, Sepsis und Meningitis. Die Ständige Impfkommission am Robert-Koch-Institut (RKI) sprach im Juli 2006 eine generelle Impfempfehlung für alle Kinder bis 24 Monate mit einem Pneumokokken-Konjugat-Impfstoff aus.
