Die ambulant erworbene Pneumonie („community acquired pneumonia“, CAP) gehört zu den häufigsten Infektionskrankheiten und trägt auch im Kindesalter zu erheblicher Morbidität und je nach Versorgungsstrukturen auch Mortalität bei. Laut WHO sterben weltweite jedes Jahr rund 2 Mio. Kinder unter fünf Jahren an einer CAP.
