This special issue of the International Journal of Steel Structures includes revised and updated papers that were originally presented at the 9th International Symposium on Steel Structures (ISSS-2017) held in Jeju, Korea on November 1–4, 2017. The symposium was organized by Korean Society of Steel Construction (KSSC). The objective of the symposium was to provide an international forum for presentation of recent advances on various aspects of construction steel and its applications to steel structures.
The theme of this symposium “Innovative Technologies & Materials in Steel Structures” has attracted interesting keynote papers from around the world, covering Risk, Resilience and Sustainability of Structures, Composite Construction, Bolt Bearing on High Strength Steel Plate, Prestressed Lightweight Steel Frames. Over two hundred presentations along with four keynote lectures covered a wide range of topics in the field of steel structures.
This issue contains thirty one excellent papers selected via the normal peer-review process. The topics include timely subjects such as Steel Structures exposed to Fire, Fatigue Reliability Analysis, Serviceability Issues for Long-Span Steel Bridges, Wind-Turbine Tower Structures, Floating Buildings, Ductile Connections, Seismic Fragilities, Hysteretic Dampers, High-Strength Steels, etc. We would like to express our deep appreciation to the authors who contributed their valuable investigations in this special issue.
The symposium and special issue could not have been organized without the help and support of many people. On behalf of the scientific and organizing committees, we would like to express our deep appreciation to the keynote speakers, session chairs, authors and delegates who all helped to make ISSS-2017 such a success. In particular, the editor wishes to thank Prof. Sang-Seup Kim (the former President of KSSC), Prof. Doobyong Bae (President of KSSC), and the local organizing committee members of the ISSS-2017.
Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you at the 10th International Symposium on Steel Structures in 2019.
