Professor Masao Iri, one of the four founding editors of the Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, passed away on 13 August 2018. He served as its Editor-in-Chief from 1997 to 2009. Our “Area Editor” system, as it is called, was introduced by him. On his retirement as Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Iri wrote an editorial note published on the opening page of the 2010 volume of this journal, where he briefly summarized the history of the journal and expressed his wishes for its success. With deepest sorrow, all the editors of the Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics express their indebtedness to this great mathematician.
