The chloroplast genome of Chunia bucklandioides (Hamamelidaceae): a rare tree endemic to Hainan, China

Chunia bucklandioides H. T. Chang is the only species of Chunia and its distribution is confined to the Diaoluo Mountain and the Jingfeng Mountain in Hainan, China. This rare species has been included in the China Plant Red Data Book and is also listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in the IUCN Red List. Here we assembled its complete chloroplast genome using data from whole genome sequencing. The chloroplast genome size of C. bucklandioides was 159,814 bp, including two inverted repeats of 26,404 bp each, separated by a large single copy of 88,827 bp and a small single copy of 18,179 bp. A total of 131 genes, including 39 tRNA, eight rRNA, and 84 protein-coding genes, were predicted. Phylogenetic analysis showed that C. bucklandioides is sister to Sinowilsonia henryi among the species analyzed. The chloroplast genome sequence of C. bucklandioides offers a useful resource for future conservation genetics and phylogenetic studies.
