Abstract

The neotype of Rhabdolepis macropterus is revisited. Together with additional material, a new reconstruction of the skull in lateral view is presented. Main characters of this species of the family Elonichthyidae are a ventral accessory operculum which completely separates the operculum from the suboperculum, and further the border between the frontal (parietal) and the parietal (postparietal) bones lying anterior to the border between the dermosphenotic and the dermopterotic bones. The diagnosis of genus Rhabdolepis is renewed. The species Rh. macropterus is compared with the sympatric elonichthyid species Rhabdolepis saarbrueckensis and Elonichthys fritschi.

I wish to thank the former curators Dr. Roland Becker/former School of Mines and Museum Saarbrücken, Dr. Wolf-Dieter Heinrich/Museum für Naturkunde Berlin and Dr. Norbert Micklich/Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt for making available their collections for my investigations and for additional help. Dr. Sally V.T. Young/British Museum (Natural History) London kindly provided latex peels of their collection. Prof. J.A. Boy/Mainz has started former investigations on Rotliegend fauna and kindly made available some loaned specimens and provided some of his sketches. Markus Poschmann/Waldesch kindly made magnesia-whitened photos of the neotype. The article was greatly improved by suggestions from the reviewers Dr. Stanislav Štamberg, an anonymous reviewer and the Editor-in-chief Dr. Mike Reich. Also I am grateful to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for funding parts of the investigation within the frame of the project „Rotliegend-Palökologie“/J.A. Boy Bo553/6. Last not least I wish to thank my wife Elke Schindler for correcting the English.
