Haptotherapy for children and parents: a case-based time-series study of angry outbursts, acceptance, affective parent-child interaction and parenting stress

Samenvatting

Inleiding

Deze studie onderzoekt de potentiële effecten van haptotherapie voor een tienjarig meisje en haar ouders.

Methode

De opzet van het onderzoek is een single-case experimenteel design met een baseline, interventieperiode I, een interventievrije periode en interventieperiode II.

Meetinstrumenten

De effecten werden gemeten met online dagboekjes (acceptatie, aantal boze buien), observaties (affectief contact) en voor- en nametingsvragenlijsten (opvoedbelasting, gedragsproblemen). Interventie-effecten voor haptotherapie werden berekend met simulation modeling analysis en reliable change indices.

Resultaten

Er was een toename van affectief contact en dagelijkse acceptatie; de dagelijkse boze buien, gedragsproblemen en opvoedingsbelasting namen gedurende de behandeling af. Kenmerkend was dat de afname van het aantal boze buien gevolgd werd door een toename van moederlijke acceptatie. Moeder en dochter lijken elkaar daarbij over en weer te beïnvloeden.

Conclusie

In een kortdurend traject met een minimale belasting van wekelijkse sessies bleken positieve veranderingen op te treden. Haptotherapie lijkt een veelbelovende kortdurende behandeling te zijn voor kinderen met mild probleemgedrag en ouders die problemen ervaren in de opvoeding.

Abstract

Objective

This study examines the potential effects of haptotherapy on a 10-year old girl and her parents.

Method

A single-case experimental design with a baseline period, intervention period I, withdrawal period and intervention period II.

Instruments

Online diaries (acceptance, frequency of angry outbursts), observations (affective contact), and pre-test and post-test questionnaires (parenting stress, problem behaviour). The intervention effects of haptotherapy were calculated with simulation modelling analysis and reliable change indices.

Results

Affective contact and daily acceptance increased, and daily angry outbursts, behaviour problems and parenting stress decreased during treatment. The decrease in the frequency of angry outbursts was followed by an increase in motherly acceptance. Mother and daughter appeared to influence each other bi-directionally.

Conclusion

Positive change processes were observed during a short haptotherapeutic intervention. Haptotherapy appears to be a promising short treatment for children with mild behavioural problems and parents who experience parenting problems.
