Samenvatting

Het melanoom is een van de meest agressieve vormen van huidkanker. Deze bijdrage geeft een overzicht van de verschillende typen melanoom en het klinisch herkennen ervan, de diagnostiek, therapie en nazorg. Daarnaast komen potentiële voorlopers, zoals atypische/dysplastische en congenitale naevi, aan bod. Deze uiteenzetting heeft als doel huisartsen handvatten aan te reiken voor het herkennen en het behandelen dan wel tijdig verwijzen van patiënten met melanomen naar een dermatoloog. Deze vroege detectie met daaropvolgende behandeling is essentieel voor de te verwachten prognose.

  1. De breslowdikte is een manier van classificeren van onder andere melanomen, die in 1970 door Breslow bedacht is. Hierbij meet de patholoog-anatoom de dikte van de tumor vanaf de granulaire laag (onder het stratum corneum/hoornlaag) van de epidermis of vanaf het geülcereerde oppervlak tot aan de allerdiepst gelegen tumorcel. De vijfjaars overleving is duidelijk gerelateerd aan deze breslowdikte.
