Mit ihrer Fähigkeit sowohl zum Streit als auch zur Bündnissolidarität hat sich die NATO stets an neue Herausforderungen angepasst. Seit dem Amtsantritt Donald Trumps sieht sich die Allianz aber einer doppelten Gefahr gegenüber: ein US-amerikanischer Präsident, der aus Nachlässigkeit und Unkenntnis die europäischen Verbündeten düpiert, und eine US-amerikanische strategische Sichtweise, die Russland als immer weniger relevant betrachtet. Verliert Russland für die USA an Bedeutung, dann wird auch die NATO für Washington immer weniger wichtig.

Abstract

NATO’s evolution over the last decades has been characterised not only by heavy disputes between allies but also by its remarkable ability to adapt to fundamentally new security challenges. However, the presidency of Donald Trump confronts the Alliance with a double peril: a U.S. leader who snubs the allies out of incompetence and carelessness and a changing American world-view, which in the long term regards Russia as less and less relevant. The problem for NATO is that if Russia is less important for Washington, NATO loses relevance for the U.S. as well.
