Abstract
Arousals play an important role in different areas of life. In this article, the various types of arousals during wake and sleep are outlined with respect to their stimuli and markers. The types of arousals during sleep are described in detail focussing on their clinical significance. With respect to their function it becomes evident that they not only fragment sleep as autonomous arousals do, but even support recreation by means of improvement of thermoregulation, muscle relaxation and avoidance of reduced blood flow in the limbs as movement arousals do. No markers have been described so far to assess this essential dual function.
