Abstract

Three sections of a fractured spring from a sleet scraper assembly that was used to remove snow and ice from a commuter rail system were received for metallurgical failure analysis. The spring reportedly cracked in service. The length of time that the spring was in service was not known. The specified material of manufacture was Grade 5160 spring steel per ASTM A 322 and ASTM A 689.
