In Memoriam: Dr. William W. Scott, Jr., FASM
Dr. William W. Scott Jr., FASM, of Aurora, Ohio, died on June 25 after battling cancer. He earned his B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette College (1963) and his Ph.D. in metallurgy and materials science from the University of Pennsylvania (1968). Bill then joined specialty plate producer Lukens Inc. in Coatesville, PA (later part of Bethlehem Steel), where he authored a number of publications and had four inventions patented.
Dr. Scott transitioned from industry to become a long-time leadership staff member of ASM International (1983–2004), serving as technical director, associate managing director, and executive director for ASM’s Affiliate Societies. Over the decades he was instrumental in strengthening ASM as the leading publisher of reliable information in the materials field, and was heavily involved with the development of high-quality, useful products and services for ASM members.
