Fatigue Failure of a Ground-Engaging Tool

A cast steel tooth used in an earth-moving application was analyzed to determine the cause of failure. The tooth reportedly failed prematurely during service was analyzed for chemical composition, hardness, and microstructure, in addition to extensive scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surface. The presence of a casting defect caused the initiation of a fatigue process due to a loose fit between the tooth and its adapter.
