ASM World Headquarters

This laboratory course is offered in response to the many requests for an opportunity to gain experience in “hands on” examination and interpretation of ferrous microstructures. The practical experience gained will supplement and reinforce understanding of the principles of physical metallurgy. The student will prepare samples by both manual and automatic techniques. Prepared metallographic samples of different alloys will also be available for examination. These alloys will be representative of a large variety of ferrous alloys with different mechanical and thermal histories. Participants will examine these alloys and prepare a descriptive and analytical discussion of the structures observed (3.0 CEUs).
