Abstract
Pitting corrosion of structural steel used in an evaporator vessel for the sugar industry has been investigated. A significant number of inclusion stringers and a banded microstructure in the ordinary mild steel used were main reasons the pitting initiated. A low-carbon (0.08% C max) copper-bearing structural steel processed by a modified rolling practice that included intensive cross rolling was developed to minimize the incidence of pitting in such vessels.
