Postoperative treatment

Abstract

A quick and complete recovery of plantar motion is a major goal of well-performed minimally invasive surgery of the forefoot (MIFS). A correct bandaging and other specific postoperative care enhance the effectiveness of the surgical procedure and prevent secondary breakdowns or other complications which would result in inevitable failure. Clinical follow-up, postoperative bandaging and related medical therapies are inseparable, and part of the technique themselves. Some main principles of management and postoperative care after MIFS are presented in this study. Postoperative management is based on the combination of analgesic coverage, anti-oedema treatment and bandaging. A successful MIFS practice implies a thorough knowledge of bandaging techniques; some techniques are suggested here, which may could be helpful in common clinical practice of surgeons approaching or having previous experience of this type of surgery.
