Der Einfluss der Gesundheit und des Gesundheitsverhaltens auf die Entstehung von Partnerschaften

The Impact of Health and Health Behavior on the Formation of Intimate Relationships

Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag untersucht den Einfluss der körperlichen und mentalen Gesundheit und des Gesundheitsverhaltens auf die Entstehung von Partnerschaften. Datengrundlage ist das Sozio-oekonomische Panel von 2002 bis 2014. Die Analysen beziehen sich auf 6071 Personen und 4194 neu entstandene Partnerschaften. Für Männer zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass eine bessere mentale Gesundheit die Übergangsrate in Partnerschaft ab dem mittleren Erwachsenenalter zunehmend erhöht. Für Frauen gehen sowohl eine bessere körperliche als auch eine bessere mentale Gesundheit im jungen Erwachsenenalter mit einer niedrigeren und im höheren Erwachsenenalter mit einer höheren Übergangsrate in Partnerschaft einher. Weiterhin zeigt die vorliegende Untersuchung, dass das Gesundheitsverhalten einen eigenständigen Einfluss auf die Entstehung von Partnerschaften hat. Sportliche Inaktivität und Übergewicht reduzieren die Übergangsrate in Partnerschaft, wohingegen Rauchen für Frauen mit einer höheren Übergangsrate in Partnerschaft einhergeht. Die Ergebnisse erlauben zum einen Rückschlüsse darauf, auf welche Weise Gesundheit und Gesundheitsverhalten die Entstehung von Partnerschaften beeinflussen. Zum anderen tragen sie zur Erklärung gesundheitlicher Ungleichheit zwischen Personen mit und ohne Partner bei.

Abstract

This paper examines the influence of physical and mental health and health behavior on the formation of intimate relationships. Data were obtained from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) for the years 2002–2014 and contain information about 6071 individuals and 4194 newly formed partnerships. For men, better mental health increasingly accelerates partnership formation in middle and later adulthood. For women, better physical and mental health reduce the transition rate into partnership at a young age and increase the transition rate into partnership at an older age. Physical inactivity and overweight reduce the likelihood of partnership formation for both women and men, whereas smoking is positively associated with partnership formation for women. The findings help to better understand how health and health behavior affect the formation of intimate relationships. Moreover, the results contribute to explaining health disparities between individuals with or without a partner.

  1. Der im SOEP verwendete SF-12v2 Gesundheitsfragebogen ist eine verkürzte und mehrfach modifizierte Form des SF-36, welcher als Instrument zur Messung gesundheitsbezogener Lebensqualität in der Medical Outcome Study (MOS) entwickelt wurde und breite Anwendung in medizinischen, klinischen und epidemiologischen Studien, in gesundheitspolitischen Untersuchungen und allgemeinen Bevölkerungsumfragen findet (Ware Jr und Sherbourne 1992). Weitere Informationen zur Entwicklung und Berechnung der Summenskalen im SOEP finden sich bei Nübling et al. (2006) sowie Andersen et al. (2007).

  2. Die genauen Fragetexte für die Items zur mentalen Gesundheit lauten: „Bitte denken Sie einmal an die letzten vier Wochen. Wie oft kam es in dieser Zeit vor, dass Sie sich gehetzt oder unter Zeitdruck fühlten?“, „… Sie sich niedergeschlagen und trübsinnig fühlten?“, „… Sie sich ruhig und ausgeglichen fühlten?“, „… Sie wegen seelischer oder emotionaler Probleme in Ihrer Arbeit oder Ihren alltäglichen Beschäftigungen weniger geschafft haben als Sie eigentlich wollten?“, „… Ihre Arbeit oder Tätigkeit weniger sorgfältig als sonst gemacht haben?“, „… Sie wegen gesundheitlicher oder seelischer Probleme in Ihren sozialen Kontakten, z. B. mit Freunden, Bekannten oder Verwandten, eingeschränkt waren?“.

  3. Bei den Variablen zum Gesundheitsverhalten wird auf eine lineare Interpolation verzichtet, da es sich um Dummy-Variablen handelt.
