Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
High-quality studies on the prevalence of diabetes and type 2 diabetes are only available in some European countries. An overview of the current situation in Europe and Germany is important for planning the future needs of diabetes prevention and care.
Objectives
The aim was to provide an overview of new studies on the current situation of diabetes and emerging risk factors in Europe and Germany.
Materials and methods
Relevant current studies were searched in MEDLINE, and were summarized and discussed.
Results
Within Europe, the prevalence of diabetes is very heterogeneous. Available studies show an increase in prevalence in recent years in particular due to population aging and lifestyle changes. Although the proportion of people with unknown diabetes in Europe remains relatively high (38%), studies revealed that this proportion is declining. The development of diabetes is also influenced by the place of residence, because in areas with high unemployment rate, noise and air pollution, the risk of diabetes is increased.
Conclusions
Further high-quality population-based studies and registries are needed for comprehensive diabetes monitoring and future planning of diabetes prevention and health care in Europe. Furthermore, more support must be given to people from disadvantaged regions with regard to a healthy lifestyle.
