For more than a century, biologists have argued (and empirically demonstrated) that evolution is one of the most profound and powerful scientific ideas. Yet, pervasive misconceptions about and negative attitudes toward this core concept persist throughout the educational hierarchy. This frustrating and deeply concerning situation has spurred an overwhelming volume of popular and scientific literature about the challenges inherent to teaching and learning evolution. While much has been learned about these challenges, evolution education remains a fruitful and fascinating domain for investigating a broad array of research questions about how humans attempt to make sense of the natural world. The collection of chapters in Evolution Challenges exemplifies how the core idea of evolution continues to engage scholars from a diverse array of disciplines in an equally diverse array of research contexts.
