Abstract
El embrujado by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, published first in 1913, did not enjoy a positive reception from the public and the critics. The play was not actually produced on stage until 1931 by the Teatro Muñoz Seca. Even though critical reception was a bit more positive this time, the play did not achieve great public success. This essay constitutes a semiotic study of El embrujado by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, one of the five works that completes El retablo de la lujuria, la avaricia y la muerte. Through a methodic, semiotic analysis of the tragedy, we are able to unveil the linguistic and cultural resources utilized by the author to convey a specific meaning. This method will give us deeper insight into the techniques employed by Valle-Inclán for the formulation and transmission of the dramatic message. An analytical study of the symbiotic relationship between the dramatic signs and the language reveals how these signs influence and affect each other creating the typical “valleinclanian” atmosphere of superstition and mystery. The author uses religious/cultural codifications to create a particular impression of repulsion and scandal.
