(Re)Staging Personal/National Tragedy: Paloma Pedrero’s Ana el once de marzo

Abstract

In Ana el once de marzo (2005), Paloma Pedrero dramatizes the stories of three women as personal testimonials of the national tragedy that befell Spain on March 11, 2004. Relying on the inherent spectacularity of violent acts and acts of terror and understanding full well that the memories of personal experiences also have social significance, the playwright poignantly recreates the tragedy of 11-M for the stage. Her reenactments of the events of March 11, 2004 make what is theatrical real and what is real theatrical. Through a stereoscopic vision of the events and the mise-en-abyme-like structure of her play, Pedrero illustrates that remembering and recounting the terrorist attacks and the resultant trauma of 11-M are prerequisites for the restoration of the social order and for the healing of the individual victims.
