This volume contains five papers presented at the Sixth International Conference on Unconventional Computation, UC’07, which was organized in Kingston (Ontario), Canada, in August 2007, under the auspices of the EATCS by the Centre for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (Auckland, NZ) and the School of Computing of Queen’s University (Ontario, CA).
The series of International Conferences Unconventional Computation (UC), http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/CDMTCS/conferences/uc/ started in 1998 in Auckland, New Zealand, and continued with conferences in Brussels, Belgium in 2000, Kobe, Japan in 2002, Seville, Spain in 2005, York, United Kingdom in 2006. It is a meeting devoted to all aspects of unconventional computation, theory as well as experiments and applications. Typical, but not exclusive, topics are: natural computing including quantum, cellular, molecular, neural and evolutionary computing; chaos and dynamical systems-based computing; and various proposals for computations that go beyond the Turing model.
Three of the selected papers were among those which received the highest marks from the UC’07 program committee reviews, and two of them were papers by keynote speakers (Lila Kari and Tal Mor). All papers are now presented in an extended form, improved according to the discussions held in Kingston, and additionally refereed. (The conference version of all papers accepted for presentation as well as the invited talks at UC’07 have appeared in the proceedings of the conference, published as volume 4618 of Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Springer, Berlin, 2007.)
I would like to thank the UC’07 organizing and program committees, along with all referees for their valuable contributions. On behalf of the above members, I want to thank the participants of UC’07 who provided final papers for consideration in this special issue. Special recognition goes to Cristian Calude who nurtures the successful series of annual international conferences on UC. Finally, I am grateful to Grzegroz Rozenberg for offering us this opportunity to showcase this current selection of ``Unconventional Computation’’ papers in Natural Computing.
