  • Published:
Measurement Techniques Aims and scope

Additional information

We are offering our readers a selection of articles based on material from the sixth international seminar “Mathematical, statistical, and computer support of the quality of measurements” held in St. Petersburg at the Mendeleev All-Russia Research Institute of Metrology (VNIIM) in June 2012. Specialists from the national metrological institutes of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, and Slovakia participated in the seminar. The major task of the seminar is to develop approaches and methods for evaluating the results of measurements, both in metrology and in practical applications. The symposium dealt with methodological aspects of the use of probability theory methods, applications of the Bayesian approach, regression analysis techniques, and statistical methods for the planning of experiments and decision making. The primary applications of the mathematical apparatus are the problems of standards measurements (comparison and calibration of standards), interlaboratory comparisons, monitoring measurements, and decision making (identification, recognition). A consistent approach for solving these problems is needed for the mutual recognition of measurements, which is vital under the conditions of the globalized world economy. The seminar is sponsored by COOMET with the participation of the members of the Working Group on Theoretical Metrology of the Countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) through MTKMetr (the scientific-technical commission on metrology).
