Letter to the Editor: “Distribution and assessment of radionuclides in sediments, soil and water from the lower basin of river Pra in the central and western regions of Ghana” (DOI 10.1007/s10967-014-3637-5)

Dear Sir,

I read an interesting article which has been published recently in your esteemed journal (J Radioanal Nucl Chem (2015) 303:1679–1685; DOI  10.1007/s10967-014-3637-5). The authors present a detailed study on natural radioactivity concentrations in sediments, soil and water from the lower basin of river Pra in the Central and Western Regions of Ghana. I appreciate their efforts and obtained results in this study. The results are valuable in respect to the public health. However, I would like to draw your kind attention in the following aspects.

  1. 1.

The authors (Adukpo et al.) reported the minimum detectable activities (MDA) as 238U (0.12 Bq kg−1), 232Th (0.11 Bq kg−1) and 40K (0.15 Bq kg−1) of the detector. Although no reference is given in calculation of MDA, I assumed that the authors used the conventional formula to obtain the MDA values. Moreover, the authors mentioned the following statement to obtain the background spectra to calculate the MDA and also to correct the net...
