Abstract

2-Hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenoneoxime is the active component of several commercial extractants that usually also contain the modifier 4-nonylphenol as a result of the manufacturing processes. The aggregation of these components, 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenoneoxime and 4-nonylphenol, as well as their interaction reactions in toluene at 28 °C have been studied by vapor pressure osmometry. Osmometric data have been treated numerically and the results reveal the formation of dimeric species of the components and the interaction between them to give a 1:1 adduct. The corresponding formation constant values are given. Finally, the osmometric behavior of the commercial extractant SME 529 has been studied and interpreted on the basis of the proposed aggregation and interaction model.
