During the last 1 year, we published three special sections; “Hot Spots” in the climate system: new developments in the extratropical ocean–atmosphere interaction research (Hot Spots), oceanographic observations after the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku (Earthquake), and the study of change in ecosystem and material cycle caused by climate change and its feedback in the western North Pacific (K2S1 project) in 71(5), 72(1), and 72(3), respectively. We will publish the second issue of “Earthquake” early next year. Some papers of “Hot Spots” and “K2S1 project” are published in the normal issues as special issue papers. Yamada and Hayasaka (2016) in the last issue and Sato et al. (2016) in this issue are also papers submitted to “Hot Spots”, although they are not listed as “Special Issue”.

We welcome for the further requests of submissions as special sections. The detail explanation of the process to publish the special section in the Journal of Oceanography can be found in the homepage of the Journal of Oceanography;

There was a mistake of the editorial process to be accepted and published online first a rejected paper, and this paper was retracted in this issue. Editor-in-Chief deeply apologize the mistake.
