The change of planned happenstance skills and its association with career-related variables during school-to-work transition

Abstract

The current study examined how planned happenstance skills (i.e., curiosity, flexibility, persistence, optimism, and risk-taking) changed during school-to-work transition and how career-related variables were associated with the initial levels and change rates of planned happenstance skills. In a sample of 307 South Korean college students, all planned happenstance skills except for risk-taking decreased over time. Furthermore, some of the career-related variables were associated with the initial level and the change rates of planned happenstance skills. In sum, the current study suggests that utilizing planned happenstance skills may be a worthwhile pursuit during school-to-work transition.

Résumé

Le changement des compétences d’aubaine planifiée et son association avec les variables liées à la carrière au cours de la transition entre l’école et le monde du travail. La présente étude examine comment les compétences d’aubaine planifiée (i.e. curiosité, flexibilité, persévérance, optimisme et prise de risque) changent durant la transition entre l’école et le monde du travail et comment les variables liées à la carrière sont associées avec les niveaux initiaux et les degrés de changement des compétences d’aubaine planifiée. Dans un échantillon de 307 étudiants universitaires sud-coréens, toutes les compétences d’aubaine planifiées diminuent avec le temps, sauf la prise de risque. De plus, certaines des variables liées à la carrière sont associées avec le niveau initial et les degrés de changement des compétences d’aubaine planifiée. En résumé, l’étude actuelle suggère qu’utiliser les compétences d’aubaine planifiée peut être un exercice utile pendant la transition entre l’école et le monde du travail.

Zusammenfassung

Veränderung von Planned-Happenstance-Kompetenzen und ihr Zusammenhang mit karrierebezogenen Variablen während des Übergangs von der Schule zum Arbeitsleben. Die aktuelle Studie untersuchte wie sich Planned-Happenstance-Kompetenzen (Neugier, Flexibilität, Persistenz, Optimismus und Risikobereitschaft) während des Übergangs von der Schule zum Arbeitsleben entwickelten und wie karrierebezogene Variablen mit Ausgangszustand und Veränderungsraten von Planned-Happenstance-Kompetenzen zusammenhingen. In einer Stichprobe von 307 südkoreanischen Studenten nahmen alle Planned-Happenstance-Kompetenzen außer Risikobereitschaft mit der Zeit ab. Darüber hinaus zeigte sich ein Zusammenhang einiger karrierebezogenen Variablen mit dem Ausgangszustand sowie den Veränderungen der Planned-Happenstance-Kompetenzen. Insgesamt legt diese Studie nahe, dass der Einsatz von Planned-Happenstance-Kompetenzen während des Übergangs von Schule zum Arbeitsleben nützlich ist.

Resumen

El cambio de las habilidades planificadas fortuitas y su relación con las variables relacionadas con la carrera profesional durante la transición de la escuela al trabajo. El presente estudio examina cómo las habilidades fortuitas planificadas (ej. curiosidad, flexibilidad, persistencia, optimismo y la asunción de riesgo) cambian durante la transición de los estudios al trabajo y cómo las variables relacionadas con la carrera profesional están asociadas con los niveles iniciales y tasas de variación de las habilidades fortuitas planificadas. En una muestra de 307 estudiantes universitarios de Corea del Sur, todas las habilidades fortuitas planificadas excepto la asunción de riegos, decrecieron con el tiempo. Además, algunas de las variables relacionadas con la carrera profesional estaban relacionadas con el nivel inicial y las tasas de variación de las habilidades fortuitas planificadas. En conclusión, el presente estudio sugiere que pueda ser interesante la utilización de las habilidades fortuitas planificadas durante la transición de la escuela al trabajo.
