ROTIFERA is an international and interdisciplinary symposium, held every 3 years since the inaugural event in 1978 in Lunz (Austria). Recent symposia have been held in Mexico, Austria, and Thailand. ROTIFERA is a network of scientists rather than a professional society, and, in an attempt to counteract the specialization of most society proceedings, aims to provide a broad overview of rotifer research regardless of discipline or methodology. While the specialized terminology and rapid changes in technology within research fields can make a broad overview challenging, the result is often a fruitful synthesis of advances from a range of disciplines.

ROTIFERA XII was organized by the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin and the Natural History Museum (Museum für Naturkunde), Berlin.
