Introduction

This special issue of Hydrobiologia comprises the refereed proceedings of the 12th EWRS International Symposium on Aquatic Weeds, held during 24–28 August 2009 in Jyväskylä, Finland. It includes 24 papers, divided into six topics: (1) biology, ecology and distribution, (2) indicator values of aquatic plants, (3) management of aquatic plants and side effects, (4) invasive plants and their ecological effects, (5) environmental management in relation to aquatic plant development and (6) aquatic vegetation and environmental relationships.

The main theme of the symposium was ‘Aquatic invasions and relation to environmental changes’. The symposium was attended by 106 participants from 30 different countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Egypt, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Latvia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland,...
