The contents of this book are much wider than the title may suggest; it also includes basic aspects of magnetospheric plasma dynamics, a key feature of which are wave-particle interactions. In this context, the word “maser” should be understood in the widest sense; it refers to a system which acts as a generator or amplifier of electromagnetic waves. Of the various wave-modes encountered in space plasmas, the whistler and Alfvén waves discussed in the book are among the most important. The core mechanism of generation of these modes is the cyclotron instability, a discussion of which runs throughout the book. It is the mission and, in some sense, the duty of the authors, who have contributed much to the field, to present the main fundamental concepts in book form. Here, they guide readers through the development of the basic ideas which originated with the pioneering papers of V. Y. Trakhtengerts from 1963 and onwards.
