Features of the structural characteristics of filter materials for leukofiltration of blood

  • Published:
Fibre Chemistry Aims and scope

In order to solve transfusion medicine problems in Russia, for filtration of blood and blood components there has been research and development of new nonwoven materials for leukofiltration which make it possible to provide the required degree of leukocyte removal from donor blood and blood components and to expand the range of domestic leukofiltration devices. We present the basic features which the filter material should have for leukofiltration. We evaluate the structural characteristics and physicochemical properties of nonwoven materials made by different methods. The studies were conducted using the standard procedure and using a procedure developed at the A. N. Kosygin Moscow State Textile University. Based on analysis of the literature and patents plus study of filter materials of foreign and domestic manufacture for leukofiltration of blood, we have worked out the specifications for new nonwoven materials to be used for leukofiltration of blood.
