This book contains the proceedings of the United Nations Expert Group Meeting on Social and Economic Implications of Changing Population Age Structures of the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat held in Mexico City from 31 August to 2 September 2005. The meeting and also the book aim to investigate changes in population age structures and the efforts made and to be made by the United Nations and by national authorities in order to cope with the challenges related to demographic transitions.

In opposite to most conference proceedings that provide only an ordered collection of contributed papers the structure of this book comprises three layers with different levels of detail. The executive summary provides the key messages of the book in a concise manner. It relates the main contents and summarises the most important findings.
