Constituents of the Essential Oils of Heracleum austriacum subsp. siifolium, an Endemic Plant of the Southeastern ALPS

The genus Heracleum L. (Apiaceae) comprises aromatic plants that are mainly native in the temperate regions of northern hemisphere. The main centers of diversity of this genus are the Caucasus Mountains and Southern China mountains (Hengduan Mountains) [1]. Heracleum austriacum subsp. siifolium (Scop.) Nyman is an endemic plant found in the southeastern Alps. It is a perennial herb with slender rhizome, 40 (–65) cm high, with pink or red petals [2, 3]. The type subspecies, H. austriacum L. subsp. austriacum, with white flowers, was used to treat epilepsy in central Europe during the Renaissance [3, 4].

In this work, the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from the rhizomes, flowering aerial parts, and fruits of H. austriacum subsp. siifolium was investigated for the first time.

Plant material was collected in July 2015, on Mt. Krvavec, a part of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, in northern Slovenia. A voucher specimen was deposited in the Herbarium of the Natural History...
